Recap

HANNA BROS LEAD NUA CLIATH PAST ATHMOR IN HEATED CLASH

Athmor handed first defeat as Nua Cliath begin title march

Tensions ran high as Nua Cliath defeated Athmor 31–19 in a physical and controversial NBHL matchup that featured big scoring runs, multiple confrontations, and a serious injury to Athmor star Drew Tschappat.

The game quickly turned into one of the most intense contests of the young season. Hits were frequent, tempers flared along the boards, and several incidents between the teams nearly escalated beyond the officials’ control.

Despite the chaos, Athmor opened the game strong thanks to Tschappat. The veteran forward scored a first-half hat trick, leading a surge that pushed Athmor to a 12–9 halftime lead and briefly shifted momentum away from last season’s runners-up.

But the second half belonged to Nua Cliath.

Forward Justin Hanna sparked the comeback, scoring two early goals after halftime to swing momentum back in Nua Cliath’s favor. His finishing ignited a stretch in which Nua Cliath’s attack began to overwhelm Athmor’s defense.

The physical tone of the game only intensified as the match wore on. At one point Tschappat and Brian Hanna had to be separated by officials after a heated exchange, highlighting the growing tension between the two sides.

Athmor players and coaches also voiced frustration with several defensive plays near the crease, arguing that Nua Cliath defenders were obstructing the goal area. No penalties were called during those sequences.

The turning point came late in the match when Tschappat left the game after a high hit, later diagnosed as a fractured knee. The injury forced Athmor to finish the game without one of their most dangerous scorers and shifted the balance decisively in Nua Cliath’s favor.

Adding to Athmor’s frustration, a goal waved off during play was later confirmed by league video review after the game had ended.

By then, however, the result was already decided.

Nua Cliath closed the match with a strong offensive push to secure the 31–19 victory, handing Athmor a tough defeat in one of the most contentious games of the NBHL season so far.

While the win strengthens Nua Cliath’s position early in the campaign, the match will likely be remembered as much for its controversy and physicality as for the final score.

For Athmor, attention now turns to regrouping — and replacing the production of a key player as they await further updates on Tschappat’s injury.
